Not scary - more mindbending thriller. I don't remember any jump scares though some of the scenes can be a bit violent if you're considering kids younger than 13. I can't stand horror movies and didn't find shutter island scary. It's tense as in thriller but isn't scary as horror. More Se7en scary than anything.
